astronomie
The solar system, right now.
Coming soon!
A real-time 3D model of the solar system: every planet, the Moon and Jupiter's large moons where they actually are right now, or at any moment you pick. Day and night, the seasons, the phases of the Moon and eclipses come out right because the positions are computed, not animated.
The film
The film will be here shortly.
Clicking loads the video from YouTube (Google). Until then nothing is sent there. Privacy
142 seconds through the solar system: Pluto, Mars, the Sun, the Moon and Earth, with the physics on screen. Rendered frame by frame, not filmed from the app.
What it does today
- Real positions. VSOP87 for the planets, ELP for the Moon, the IAU rotation models for how each body is turned. Good to about an arcminute over several thousand years.
- Sun, nine worlds, five moons. Mercury to Neptune, Pluto, the Moon and the four Galilean moons.
- Physical light. Scattering atmospheres, Earth's city lights, clouds and ocean glint, Saturn's ring shadows, solar and lunar eclipses, moon shadows on Jupiter.
- The real sky. About 9,100 stars from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue in their true colours, in front of the Milky Way aligned to galactic coordinates.
- Any moment. Run the clock from real time up to a year per second, backwards too, or jump to any date.
- True to scale. Distances and sizes are real. A slider enlarges the bodies for an overview; the distances between the planets stay to scale.
- English and German. Runs in the browser with WebGL 2.
Roadmap
- Done The real-time model in the browser: positions, rotation, lighting, sky and time control
- Done The film
- In progress A native desktop version for Linux, built with Godot and the ephemerides in Rust
- Next Public release of the web version, right here
- Next Moons for Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
- Next Light-time correction: the sky as it is seen, not only as it is
No dates yet; the order may change.
